Levels: Small classes for beginning to intermediate level students. I like to alternate between basic skills (color theory, composition, drawing, perspective, etc.) and wildly improvisational creativity. During the summer (May-August), classes may be less regular (get on the email list for weekly updates). This summer we will work on drawing skills as well as painting outdoors. Since we will be working outdoors, students may use any medium, including oils or pastels. The day/time for classes may also change during the summer, so contact me if you want updates.
September – April classes are held weekly, on Saturdays, 12:30 – 3 p.m., at Cottonwood Presbyterian Church, 1580 E. Vine St. (6100 S.) in the Murray-Cottonwood area.

DRAWING
I begin by teaching a range of strong drawing skills even if your focus is painting. Each of these skills is part of a process enabling students to find their natural way of drawing. You learn accuracy combined with self expression. I teach light and shade which is so valuable in planning a watercolor from the first conceptual moment.
PAINITNG / WATERCOLOR
I studied figure drawing and painting in oil under Paul Davis, David Dornan and Doug Snow. Due to chemical injury I worked in egg tempera for 5 years then switched to the gorgeous medium of watercolor. I teach mostly watercolor, sometimes gouache used like oil, or egg tempera for the curious and brave.
I take students through the basics of watercolor handling to more complex processes.
Over the years I studied the techniques of many great watercolor artists. Most inspired by John Singer Sargent, I traveled to NYC for private viewings of his watercolors at the Met and the Brooklyn, as well as, specifically to view the JOHN SINGER SARGENT WATERCOLORS exhibition in 2013 at the Brooklyn Museum. The techniques of other artists using watercolor I studied in-depth include Joseph Raffael, Carolyn Brady, Joseph Zbukvic, Charles Reid, Mary Whyte, Lars Jonsson and others. That being said I do not teach students to paint like me or any other artist. I help students find their personal, favorite and intuitive way of working in watercolor that suits their temperament and vision.
I am familiar with most watercolor papers from around the world.
Each paper takes the paint differently resulting in varying effects.
MY WORK
Two of my paintings, Killdeer and Shelter, are in the permanent collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, a museum that specializes in bird artists from around the world. My work has been juried into Birds in Art 5 times and selected for the subsequent national tours from each exhibition. Birds in Art is Woodson Art Museum’s prestigious annual international exhibition.
Gracie, a privately commissioned portrait of an Irish Setter, was juried into SPLASH 19.
Credentials: I have conducted watercolor classes in my studio for 25 years with an average enrollment of 40 students/week.

Deena Riley Millecam teaches watercolor classes at Uintah Heritage Museum in Vernal, Utah the third Thursday of each month.Beginners and intermediate students enjoy learning the techniques of water and pigment. Classes range from beginners to intermediate with emphasis on composition, design, and value.
Deena graduated with a Bachelor of Education teaching art at the junior high level. She continued her education and was involved in administration for many years. But she has seen the light and returned to art.
The opportunity to teach in detention and addiction recovery centers fulfills a dream of sharing art therapy with others.
Her love of watercolor is seen in her paintings shown in several galleries and exhibits throughout the state. She appreciates time spent learning new techniques with many established artists and rubbing shoulders with local painterly-friends!
