About the Workshop
You will explore occupied (positive) and unoccupied (negative) space within painting compositions. The elements of design will be considered as you create a number of paintings from realistic to non-representational. Positive critique will be a part of the workshop to enhance personal strengths and individual artists voice. You will feel enriched with new excitement through our shared experience as you work on your individual paintings. The time will go quickly and you will walk away feeling revitalized with new artistic understandings.
Schedule
Day One – Morning Painting
Select an image for painting from your reference materials
Painting with masking using contact paper to develop layers 2 to 3 time. Working with a Positive and negative focus – mask and then add more paint and mask again, repeat much like a batik painting. Use organic, natural lines that move and flow.
Critique and share out.
Day One – Afternoon Painting
Masking Techniques with masking tape or Blue tape in a variety of sizes for controlled work in various areas on the painting. Focus on Geometric angles, lines, shapes and planes.
Critique and share out.
Day Two – Morning Painting
A paining containing – realistic, abstract and non-representational work –
Another option would be 3 separate paintings in a Series format!
Critique and share out.
Day Two – Afternoon Painting
Exploration of Surfaces – Actual or implied textured surfaces or look alike, to experiment with surfaces for break trough of ideas. Soap Bubbles, Paper Marbling, etc.
Critique and share out
Supplies:
*Reference materials – photos or small items that you have interest in, natural or man-made
*Pencil
*Watercolor paper – your choice of size (Individual piece or Watercolor Block)
*Masonite, Board or Foam Core to mount paper on – unless working on a Block
*Watercolors or acrylics, or other paint mediums – chrome colors, metallic colors
*Pallet for mixing colors
*Brushes – favorite sizes and kinds
*Water container
*Masking Tape – variety of sizes
*Rubber Cement or other masking Fluid
*Old file folders for making templates for masking
*Texture templates that you may have
*X-acto knife
*Scissors

Doug Allen Bio
Doug Allen has taught Advanced Placement Studio Art classes for over 25 years and is currently Fine Arts Consultant for Jordan School District in Sandy, Utah. He also teaches Art Classes for Brigham Young University Salt Lake Center. He is a graduate from the University of Utah with a Masters Degree and Bachelors of Fine Arts.
He is not only an educator, but also an accomplished artist and has many commissions for his paintings. He taught high school in Australia where he won 1st place in an international painting competition celebrating the discoveries of Capitan Cooke. (click here to view)
He has been a grader for the College Board in Studio Art for the past 6 years. He has also been an AP Consultant teaching Workshops and Institutes on strategies for teaching Art Studio. He has presented workshops at the National Art Education Association Convention, and was invited to present a workshop at the National AP Conference in 2005 and again in 2007. He was awarded a teacher scholarship at the Chicago Art Institute in 2006 to work with other selected master teachers from across the country. His students have won numerous awards in many areas, including 2 National Awards (1995 & 2005) for the Federal Jr. Duck Stamp Contest and the National PTSA Reflections Competition. Many of his former students have successful art careers.
