Utah Watercolor Society October 5, 2021, 7:00 pm General meeting Andy Evansen will be demonstrating for the general membership at SUP. Andy Evansen Signature Member of AWS, PAPA, RRWS, TWSA Andy Evansen’s interest in art started in childhood, as he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. He began painting watercolors in the mid 1990s as a change of pace from his career as a medical illustrator. Choosing a ‘style’ was not difficult, as Andy was always inspired by the watercolor paintings of British artists Trevor Chamberlain, David Curtis, Ed Seago and Edward Wesson, among others. He found himself attempting to capture the landscape with the same economy of brushstroke, taking advantage of the luminosity of watercolors done in just a few washes. In addition, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty, subjects that many would simply pass by. His work gained recognition after winning an international watercolor competition through American Artist magazine, appearing on their cover in 2005. He’s been featured in numerous other publications since, and has become a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally. He became a signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) in 2012 and served as their President from 2015-2017. His paintings have won numerous awards, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society, and he was their demonstration artist for the 2018 Exhibition. His love of painting on location also led to him being a featured presenter at the 2014 and 2016 Plein Air Conventions and inclusion in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event. CVC President a message from Brad Kropp It seems like fall is arriving quickly this year. Just a few days days ago, it was too warm when I took our dog for her afternoon walk and we’re still getting tomatoes from the garden. But, the evenings have taken on a chill lately and the scrub maples in the foothills are already turning red. I’m delighted by what’s coming. The cool morning air and changing leaves of autumn are exciting and the tempo of our lives seems to pick up a little this time of year. Before retiring, I used to look forward each year to the flurry of activity and anticipation that accompanied my students back to their classes at the end of summer. When fall arrives nowadays, I still feel the same energy – except that now, it’s because I can’t wait to throw out my greens and start painting with fall colors. I hope that you also experience a creative impulse as autumn rolls around this year. This fall has seen the Cache Valley Chapter of UWS get off to a good start. We had about two thirds of our membership present at our first meeting on September 14th when Lester Lee gave a great demo on painting faces. That was followed by a more intensive free workshop on painting faces given by Lester on the following Saturday at Sky View High School. If you were unable to attend our first meeting, we would love to see you at our next one. Let me remind you that we will (mostly) meet this year at Green Canyon High School in North Logan beginning with a critique at 6:30. Keep an eye out for our monthly announcements and updates.
