President’s Message: Synergism |
by Sherry Meidell The definition of synergism is the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects . That means if you work together you are more powerful than you would be working separately. There is a great power of synergism in the watercolor society and it blesses the lives of us as individual artists. First there is the great example of artists that have been painting longer than we have. At every member meeting and every workshop we are exposed to their expertise. We can take a look at there art work and learn from it. It gives us a goal and something to work towards. If they can paint like that, maybe I can learn to paint better than I am now. We can see how great artists are so willing to share the knowledge they have gained. We can learn how to give a good workshop by attending good workshops. There is also the knowledge we learn from other artists in common conversation. We can learn about different paints, where to buy good art supplies, and that we still have a smudge of thalo blue on our forehead. We can commiserate with each other and tell the stories behind our paintings, like Gail Wilhelmsen who painted a picture of one of her relatives that never wanted her picture taken and is now immortalized in watercolor and can be seen up at the 2 Star Signature Show at Eccles. We have access to great shows to display our art. We have the affiliation with Western Fed which raises the bar for our shows. If you have the good that one artist brings to the society and the good another artist brings to the society it is more than they could individually bring if you add that together. So join up. Volunteer become involved and see were your beautiful artistic talent will take you. DONATE TO THE UWS MARY STRAIGHT SCHOLARSHIP FUND |
Mary Jane Wright Straight passed away on November 20, 2012. She was a dedicated art teacher, mentor, friend, and contributor to the Utah Watercolor Society. The Utah Watercolor Society awards two scholarships to Utah high school students each year. Winners are selected from those students who are accepted to the annual Springville Museum of Art High School Art Show. In honor of Mary’s memory, the UWS has named our Scholarship Fund for her. A good way to remember Mary’s legacy and to encourage continued education in the arts is to contribute to the scholarship fund. Click the button below if you’d like to donate. |
