March seemed to tiptoe in on tiny, silent cat’s paws bu it certainly has had its moments. Linda Flannery had a wonderful paint out scheduled at Wheeler Farm on 15 March, but Utah’s weather had other plans. Not much fun, trying to paint in the snow. Oh well. It will be interesting how the rest of March shakes out. Maybe the little cat becomes a roaring lion? April will likely bring its proverbial showers and that’s okay here, in the second driest state in the country–more water is always good. It also gets me kind of excited for spring runoff, where all that lovely snow in the mountains comes crashing down in the form of swollen rivers and creeks, just perfect for playing and paddling in my kayaks! If you have not tried this whitewater sport, I highly recommend it! (I’ve been doing it since 1998.)
I’ve had a little bump in the road of life of my own: surgery on 11 March, and the recovery has been slower than I like, but it IS coming along. I’m excited to get back to painting (and kayaking!) instead of lying flat on my back, and getting into the great outdoors to do all that. How about you?
Ian Ramsay’s workshops were outstanding! I think everyone who participated in either the Wednesday-Thursday or the Friday-Saturday sessions agree, we all learned so much–thank you, Ian!
The upcoming meeting for April, we’re doing something a little different: we hope to have about 8-10 or so of our fellow Society members come with some of their artwork, each displaying on their own table, and talk about their inspirations and process. The goal is that we all get to know each other better, become more familiar with each others’ techniques, and hopefully help each other to get more excited about this artistic medium we all love (and sometimes hate). Maybe together we can overcome that dreaded “white page syndrome.“
Coming up in May, don’t forget Geoff Allen‘s 4-day workshop, scheduled for 7-10 May. You can register for the workshop here. Along with that, our Spring Exhibition begins with opening night on Friday, 9 May at 6:00 pm, in The Gene Nelson Attic at the Provo Library (550 N. University Avenue, Provo, Utah). The prospectus for our Spring Exhibition, which Geoff will be judging, is also up. Deadline for entries is 7th April. That’s coming up fast, so let’s get painting! We’ve sent out emails on both events.
Remember, our May members’ meeting will still be held on Tuesday, 6. May, so we can all benefit from Geoff’s demonstration that night.
As your Utah Watercolor Society Board, we wish you all the best and happy painting as the weather continues to warm up.
