Thoughts on FEAR Do you ever let fear stop you from doing or accomplishing something that you wanted to do? When I was in High school I wanted so badly to be in the musical. I was quite comfortable singing, dancing, and performing. But, auditioning made me nervous; I knew that I was going to be judged. I took choir and dance classes but, not drama class, as a result, the drama teacher that I would have to audition for did not know me, and I found her to be quite intimidating. At the encouragement of my choir and dance teachers, I went to the two days of auditions. But when I got there, I just sat in the back, and never got up the courage to audition. As a result, I got to see many of my friends in the play and I went to all the performances filled with regret. So now I use fear as motivation. I fear regret. I fear lost opportunities, I fear what will happen if I don’t take that chance. I only have so much time in this life, and I don’t want to waste any of that time not growing and not going forward. Recently when I was doing the “Quick Paint” at AATP in Capitol Reef, the time was up sooner than I expected. My painting was not done, it was just starting to get out of what I call the “ugly teenage phase” but, there was something about it that I liked. As I looked at it I thought “I’d better not submit this. I’m just going to embarrass myself. What if nobody likes it?” I decided to take the chance and submit the painting anyway. I ended up winning first place with that painting. You never know what will happen if you take that chance but, if you don’t put yourself out there then nothing will change and I fear you may regret that. Brienne Brown Fall 2022 Workshop Thanks to everyone who participated in this great workshop! The Brienne Brown workshop is in the books. Everyone had a great time and we all learned lots. It was fun for the members who knew Brienne before she moved back East to spend some time with her for the week. We had many newer members who got to know what a nice person she is. We even had a lady from Brienne’s home state come crossed country to take the class. Hope to see more of you at our next workshop in the spring. Best regards. Becky Hartvigsen |

After sharing some frustration with a friend about my goals and aspirations I have for my art, he shared a quote with me by Sadie Valeri. It was on point and something that I needed to hear. “Don’t worry too much about whether you are “good enough”. The only thing that matters is how much personal desire you have to paint and it’s clear that you have plenty. Just try to stay positive. As artists moments when we are truly enjoying ourselves while drawing or painting. Arrange your life to taste that pure enjoyment as often as possible, and the rest will follow.” With a full-time job, children, grandchildren, and a large yard, finding the time to feel that pure enjoyment is difficult. Plus, l life’s distractions help to keep me from accomplishing some of my goals. However, I have really tried to apply this thought into my personal practice. It hangs by my desk at work and in my studio at home. I wanted the constant reminder that my artwork, the act of creating, should be and most of the time is, pure enjoyment. Isn’t that one of life’s goals, enjoyment? I am also finding that if I concentrate more on the process rather that the outcome, I can relax more and learn more. Although I want to get better, improve my skills, and increase my business, I want to enjoy the journey and make the most of the time that I do get to create. My challenge to you this month is to apply this thought. How can you fulfill your personal desire to draw, paint, or create in any way. Do everything you can to find the time and then find that pure enjoyment as often as possible. |
